Tadashi Shoji

New York Fashion Week Fall 2013 RTW: Tadashi Shoji

When I think of velvet, I think of my tea-length, forest green, 8th grade dance dress disaster. I do not think of high fashion or elegance, yet Tadashi Shoji’s Autumn Winter 2013 collection shown in New York City may change my views. The delicate and feminine draping of floor length gowns combined with meticulous burn out patterns was breathtaking.

Shoji tied the collection together through Baroque lace patterns, with a personal favorite consisting of a deep gold velvet with a down-to-there drop in the mini-cowl neckline. To stay demure, a panel of black lace accents to the collarbone reminiscent of an elegant boat neck. The gown was fresh and showed a trend towards less skin, more modesty. Paired with the rest of his new collection, we couldn’t help but feel like we were taking a trip on The Silk Road during a New England Fall.

Shoji showed a modified fit and flare from last year’s silhouette of choice. Still featuring a fitted, dropped waist bodice, his elegant gowns were given either a more deliberate and full semi-circle skirt, or delicate and flowing layers of chiffon. Also consistent in his collection were high necklines and turtlenecks, as well as long sleeves. We are head over heels for his caped designs as well!

We know with the stunning textile collaborations, modest designs highlighting the mystery of a woman’s body and traditional, worldly elegance; we are going to be seeing this collection hit the red carpet with a force. Pick your favorite Shoji piece from A/W 2013, tell us who you want to see it on and why!

New York Fashion Week Spring 2013 RTW: Tadashi Shoji

Day one of Fashion Week came in with heavy hitters including Tadashi Shoji, despite being the shortest show day of the affair. Showing at the Lincoln Center, Shoji said he wanted to take his viewers on a trip around the world, through the most magical places. His designs showcased such areas as the "modern Silk Road" being shown through Venetian cutwork in delicate fabrics, flowing dresses with sheer iKat prints, and beaded, embroidered bodices that brought out the mysteries of Ancient China.

Shoji featured a varying color palate, shifting from soft nudes, sands and blush tones in his evening wear to brighter paprika and jewel toned primaries in his stunning every day dress collection. The one underlying feature was Shoji's ability to create fluid movement in his pieces, making the dress as much a part of the wearer as the wearer itself. The evening gowns flowed down the runway in fluid streams of chiffon and lace. The daytime dresses bounced with the perk of the models steps.

Tadashi Shoji helped create a strong introduction to Fashion Week, sending our minds reeling for what our closets can lust after for Spring 2013. The trend of strong, clean and modern femininity seemed to reign supreme through Day One.
